6. Malignant melanoma spreads to other organs including the lungs and liver and it is responsible for 75% of all skin cancer deaths
7. Early stage melanoma has a better survival rate. A late diagnosis of melanoma usually is generally incurable so you should have regular checkups.

10. If you are pregnant you should always consult your doctor before using a tanning bed. Studies are unclear as to the dangers to your baby and whether your baby could have an increased risk of skin cancer.
11. If you use a tanning bed more than once a month you are 55% more likely to develop malignant melanoma
12. Exposure to UVA rays causes the same type of problems as UVB rays –wrinkles, and skin cancer.
13. Today’s tanning lamps give off only 5% UVB compared to the earliest beds which had up to 98% UVB rays.
14. If you are fair skinned you are at a higher risk for melanoma
15. The medical association has pass laws banning minors in some states from being able to use sun tanning beds because of the increased risks of cancer.
16. Skin cancer is not a disease that just old people get.
17. It takes around 10 years from when you are exposed to the development of skin cancer.
18. 95% of skin cancers are the less serious form and 5% is the deadly melanoma which if caught early has a 95% 5 year survival rate.
19. Ten trips to a tanning bed doubles your risk of melanoma.
20. In 90% of cases, severe sunburn is what triggers melanoma.
21. In the United States in 2003 1 in 65 people has a risk of getting melanoma. It is projected by 2010 the rate will be 1 in 50

Tanning beds are not any more dangerous than the sun, they just aren’t any safer. That said sun worshippers are not going to give up tanning and as with all types of cancer there are many factors including genetics that come into play.

Wolff tanning beds health risks are the same as any other tanning bed but a little bit of common sense and you’ll be able to have your tan and stay safe.
