I want to buy a monthly membership at a tanning salon. They have to put a card on file (for I guess just to be sure you pay the monthly fee) They put the card on file but they don’t charge it unless I don’t pay for that month.
My quesiton is, is it Ok to use my debit card? I don’t have a credit card…Is it safe to use my debit card..will someone steal the number and steal my money and then open up another account in my name and keep stealing my moneY???? I clueless about this stuff.
So, is it safe to use my debit card? THANKS!
Amber!
I will hit on the piece by piece
"They have to put a card on file (for I guess just to be sure you pay the monthly fee) They put the card on file but they don’t charge it unless I don’t pay for that month"
That is probably true
"Is it safe to use my debit card..will someone steal the number and steal my money and then open up another account in my name and keep stealing my moneY???? I clueless about this stuff."
If someone did steal your number they would not be able to open another account with that number alone, they would need more information like your SSN, DL Number etc.. and if they did open a new account they would not be able to steal any of YOUR money unless you put money in the account. The damage would be limited to the balance in the account with the debit card + Bank overdraft charges and fees if they ran you into the negative.
"So, is it safe to use my debit card?"
Do not use a debit card for things like "deposits" ie when you rent a car or hotel room and they ask for a credit card. If you use a debit card they will "hold" a chunk of money which will keep you from accessing it, attempts to access it can incur alot of bank generated fees.
I mentioned in your other question how I hate debit/atm cards. If I were you I would go ahead and apply for a credit card if need be. They are not harmful if you stay disciplined and pay them off in full every month
No, a debit card is never safe, You have no chargeback protection and they can continue to deduct any amount they want even when you quit going and you will have a terrible time getting it straightened out. Use at your own risk.

Without a regular credit card, looks like you will need to use the debit card. If it’s a business you trust, don’t stress over privacy issues, just go for it. I’d try and get a credit card, though. It might have to a secured one to start, but it’s a start! Good luck!

Here are some options:
1) If you have an ATM card that has a visa or Mastercard logo on it, then you could use it as a credit card.
2) If your ATM does not have any of the credit card logos, DON’T leave your ATM number because they will need a pin number to use it- and if one of the employees is not that honest he or she could use your card and you wouldn’t want to go through that. So to avoid putting your financial life at risk, if I were you, I would apply for a credit card. Credit cards are good as long as you pay it in full every month. I own more than one card, and have never purchased anything I cannot pay at the end of the month.
3) If you don’t feel like applying for a credit card, I would suggest you try to work a deal with the tanning salon. Ask them why they need to have a credit card in file, so you can come up with solution. If they are afraid that you will forget to pay them for the month (like you say), then offer to pay them cash the month in advance.
4) You could also ask your mother or father to let you use their credit card, and you could pay them if you forget to pay the salon.
Good luck to you…
