Should I buy a tanning lamp, how do they work, and where can i buy one?

I’m a 21 year old man who has fair skin, and is now suffering during the Summer because my skin is so pale and sensitive.
I’m considering buying a personal tanning light/ lamp to use sparingly, but more importantly, to tan and toughen my skin. Is this a good idea, do they sell personal tanning lamps, and does tanning actually make your skin tougher and more resistant to light/ heat?
Educated answers only, please. Ladies, perhaps you know more about this, as others guys have told me to just work in the swealtering sun for a few days…

If you buy one they’re usually around $200 and up. A really good one would cost you around $500. I don’t recommend any self tanning lamp, or beds for extreme health reasons.
The best way is to honestly go out in the sun during the time the sun burns the most. noon-4pm. I’m not saying to go out and burn, go out for 20 minutes each day.
