I remember my mom had one back in the 50s. I thought it would be a good way to kill bed bugs. I don’t have em yet but people keep saying eventually you will. I remember it having an infra-red light and could really burn you if you were not careful.

I have not seen one in a long time. That is a good idea for killing bed bugs. However I think this scare has all of the merits of "The Swine Flu" epidemic.

Pet stores sell infra red lamps in the reptile section.

  1. I hope not. I’ve been reading a lot lately about how dangerous they are. They cause more melanoma than the sun.

  3. Hi Daisymae, I’m not sure if they still do.
As Nana T says they haven’t had a very good write up over recent years what with all the health scares etc.

  4. I heard something on the news last night about killing bedbugs if your home has a stubborn case of them and you can’t rid of them. You can turn your heater up on the high setting and heat the home for a certain amount of time until they get hot and dry up and die. They said it costs hundreds of dollars in energy to do that but it may be a last resort. Plus you probably need to do something with things are affected by heat such as candles and stored foods in the pantry and medications, and find some place to stay while doing this. One family in Oklahoma City discovered bedbugs a couple years ago after returning from vacation and staying in hotels. They threw out their mattresses and cleaned everything, carpet, bedding, etc. and used pesticides. Nothing was working and they finally had all their carpeting removed and replaced. The heat method would have cost less than everything they did. The heat-method is being used at university, OSU in Oklahoma is using it for a current infestation, takes 5 hours with some special heaters, and don’t know how much the company charges for doing it.
