Are High Pressure Tanning Beds Safe During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a wonderful time but many mothers. Of course we all know that there is no one more radiant than an expectant mother. But still it’s common for you to be worried about losing your sex appeal and wanting to continue tanning or even start tanning to make you feel better. But are high pressure tanning beds safe during pregnancy?

It’s important that you see your doctor before tanning not only in a high pressure bed but in any indoor tanning bed. Whether tanning beds pose a risk to your baby is definitely under debate with the medical professionals.

A high pressure tanning bed uses quartz lamps that are above the body and are varying lengths. You lye flat on the comfortable mattress for 12 minutes and then you turn over to tan the other side. They earned the name high pressure because of the way the gasses are kept in the quartz lamp above atmospheric pressure which is the opposite of traditional beds.

These are very sophisticated beds which block almost all UVB rays and the higher frequencies of the UVA rays, leaving the safest part of the spectrum present to provide a deep, dark tan without the risk of burning. As well, the second filter system removes a large percentage of the infrared spectrum and the bright white light is reduced creating a more relaxing atmosphere. The result is the fastest, safest tan possible.

Many experts believe that the ultra violet rays never reach the fetus so therefore risk to the baby is almost non existent. Others disagree with this philosophy. However both teams do agree that during your fist trimester you should not sit out in the sun, use a hot tub, sauna, or tanning bed because the raise in your body temperature can be potentially dangerous to your baby.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good but your baby’s health should be your number one concern and I’m sure it is. When you are pregnant you do a great job of giving u a variety of habits that are potentially bad for your baby and tanning is no different. Since the result of tanning are so inconclusive why take the risk at all?

If you decide to use the tanning beds you need to make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, stay cool, and moisturize plenty. Never let yourself burn as this poses risks to you and your baby.

If you decide to use an indoor tanning bed while you are pregnant, then using a high pressure bed would be your best choice. Another option you might consider is the sunless spray tan booths. Wait - gone are the days of turning a beautiful shade of orange! You enter the booth and a gentle spray covers your entire body within minutes. Today’s spray tan is superior and provides you with a beautiful golden tan that lasts a week to ten days with absolutely no health risks. A smart choice if you’re pregnant.

High pressure tanning beds are the safest tanning bed on the market. Whether you are pregnant or not these beds are the best choice and many salons have at least one. Be sure to ask!
