Each day millions of people head off to the salon for their daily tanning session. Some go to get their base tan for their vacation. Some go through the winter months to keep that golden tan. Some go all year round because it’s convenient and they feel good all over with a tan. So are tanning beds safe?

Here are 5 Facts you should know.

1. Sun Exposure Can Actually Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer

Many studies have shown that exposure to the sun in moderation on a regular basis can help prevent breast cancer, colon, and several other types of cancer.

The only reliable source of Vitamin D is the sun and it’s believed it may play a role in stopping pre-cancerous cells from reproducing. More research is currently being done.

Stats show that in parts of the world deprived of sun the overall cancer rates are higher than in those areas that have higher sun exposure. Tropical areas have overall much lower cancer rates than Northern areas.

2. People Who Are Regularly Exposed To The Sun Have Lower Malignant Melanoma Rates

Research has shown those that get regular exposure to sun actually have a lower risk of melanoma skin cancer. Recent studies show that melanoma is more common in northern areas than southern areas because of the continuous all year round exposure in southern areas.

So for example those that only get small doses of sun occasionally the risk of melanoma goes up. But for those that regularly work outside or spend a lot of time out in the sun the risk of melanoma actually goes down.

3. The Benefits of the Sun Outweigh the Risks

Melanoma kills 1200 people a year. Colon and breast cancer kill 150,000 a year. Osteoporosis affects 25 million Americans with 1.5 million suffering fractures that may lead to deal. Sun exposure reduces the risk of these other forms of cancer and provides the body with needed vitamin D. So although in some cases it may increase the risk of skin cancer the benefits far outweigh those risks.

4. Dermatologists Biased

Most of the work of a dermatologist is cosmetic in nature. Skin cancer is not and thus sometimes too much focus gets put on this one area which sometimes leads to overstatement of the issue and or not looking at the bigger picture such as lower risk of other forms of cancer.

5. Indoor Tanning Reduces Sunburn

Those that tan indoors are 85% less likely to get a sunburn. Salon staff take educating their clients seriously and play an active role in providing information to help clients tan safely.

Moderate tanning is just fine. What’s important is to avoid a sunburn. Avoiding the sun is not only practical it’s not good for your overall health. Salon staff do their part to teach clients how to tan smart.

Tanning beds provide the same benefits as the sun does but with reduced risks because the UVB rays which cause burning are not present.

Are tanning beds safe? Absolutely! When used in moderation they can provide some healthy benefits and keep you looking great!

Unfortunately, a good installation does put pressure on your vehicle’s interior fabric. You may put a THIN towel or mat under your carseat to prevent gouges. You must NOT put thick towels or any compressible material under a forward-facing carseat, as this can reduce the safety of your installation.

Anyone own this seat in either pattern or just own it period? Which one should i get? Thank you and happy new year.
don’t be smart with me . What does a song have to do with anything?

I’m not sure where you heard good things but this is NOT a seat that we recommend in the car seat community. As a technician we look for seats that give their money’s worth and will last a child until they can safely be moved up to the next step. This is not one of those seats. I’m guessing you read reviews on the consumer reports or some such thing. Those reviews are given by parents, and most likely parents who have no idea about safety and how a seat should work and what makes a *good* seat. The AOE has one of the lowest harness heights of seats on the market, its outgrown way before a child is ready to be boostered. In fact you should stay away from ANY seat that has 3-in-1 in its name. Your money is better spent on a good convertible seat and then buying a dedicated booster later on when the child is ready.

I’d love to help give you some suggestion but have a few questions first. what is the age, height, and weight of the child that needs the seat? what kind of vehicle? and are there other seats in the vehicle it would need placed next to? and are you practicing extended rear facing? or is the child forward facing?

I have come to the conclusion that my MIL has BPD. The more I read about it, and how to deal with people who have it, the more I am convinced that is exactly what she has.

We have a toddler and another baby on the way. We don’t feel right about letting my MIL babysit because we worry for our child’s safety. She loves our child very much and would never do anything to intentionally harm our child, but she has no attention span and gets lost inside her own head, so we have witnessed many occasions where our child could have gotten hurt if we weren’t there to intervene.

We have come to terms with the fact that we just can’t let her babysit. As nice as it would be to have a babysitter, the parental instincts won’t allow it. It sucks, but it is what it is. What I am struggling with, is how much exposure should the children have in general? I would like for her to be a part of their lives, because she is their grandmother after all, but the way she acts and especially the things she says to our toddler and around our toddler… I worry what effect her nonsense will have on our children. They are too little to understand. They are too little to shrug off the crazy things she says. All the time we find ourselves saying "Don’t tell her that" or "Don’t say that" because of something she said to our toddler. Toddlers believe everything their parents and grandparents tell them. It’s only a matter of time before she says something in a moment of acidic manipulation & drama to try to turn our own children against us. Not only that, but she is always saying crazy things that I fear will make our children neurotic. She projects her crazy onto everyone else. She is convinced the dog is hungry/constipated/has false pregnancy all because the dog looked at her as she walked by. Now with our child, she lends these ailments to our child and keeps asking our child if her tummy hurts or if she’s cold or if she has an earache to the point where our child all of a sudden complains about this supposed illness that never existed until grandma drilled it into her head.

It is always drama with her. She has already convinced her side of the family that she is the victim in all this. They live about an hour away, so they don’t see her as often, and when they do it’s usually in a large gathering where people are not really paying attention to just her. They don’t know the extent of her behavior, they just think she’s kinda weird or full of drama at times. She tells them all sorts of nonsense about us. She tells them we never let her see our kid even though we invite her over all the time and she is always "too tired" or has a "headache" or just has "too much stuff to do" like tanning and nail appointments and hair appointments and shopping trips because something somewhere is on sale. We invite her all the time, and 90% of the time she turns us down. After a week or two of turning us down, she complains to everyone that she never gets to see our kid.

Anyway, I could go on all night about all the things she does and says. She is like a textbook example of BPD. But my question is, should I keep her away from our children as much as possible for fear of her screwing with their heads? If she says something, lashes out, or otherwise does something to screw up my kids’ heads, I will feel like I should have prevented it. The thought has crossed our minds that she could, at some point, try to run off with our child. Her brain would be telling her that kidnapping would be a good idea and her brain would tell her we deserve it for trying to keep her grandkid away from her or something, and then it would end in a murder-suicide or something scary like that. We know that the odds of that happening are fairly small, but still…

Should we take that chance so that she can be part of their lives? Should we risk their sanity (and ours) so that she can be part of their lives? Or should we just keep a lot of distance between her and them so that we can minimize such risks? Should we keep them away from her altogether? If I have to choose between her or my kids, I pick my kids. They’re way more important to me. I want them to be happy and healthy, both mentally and physically. Am I risking all that by letting her hang around? Is it in their best interest to kick grandma out of their lives or will that be a bad thing to do?

Don’t kick grandma completely out of their lives. Visit often. Just don’t leave them alone with her.

yes you can still tan with sunscreen, when i was younger i didn’t think i would be able to so i never wore it. you don’t need to burn either, you don’t want to burn, you can get cancer. its easier to just get a real tan instead of a fake one

im not worried about safety or anything.
My question is, when you tan (using a tanning bed) for your VERYY first time, is it noticeable? like realllyyy noticeable? i dont want to come to school looking one shade one day, and a completely darker version the next. I dont wanna look fake… Im not extremely pale, but im not olive skinned…i have ivory skin with freckles. (and i dont burn)
thanks

Well, depends how long you stay in the tanning bed. You said you’re not "extremely pale" but you ARE sorta pale, right? If you tend to be lighter skinned, it’ll definitely be more noticeable after one use.

I’m going tanning for the first time & have found a salon & made an appointment….i know all about talking to the clerk about my skin tone and the length of time i should spend inside…etc, but what id like to know is what the actually percedure is….like how you get into and out of the bed…plus do you tan with a bathing suit or nothing….thnks

I DONT CARE~if ur going to lecture me on the safety problems with beds dont bother!!

okay ive done this plenty of times.
first, the salon should have sunscreen in there. you should apply a dab of sunscreen to every mole you have, to reduce the skin cancer.. if they dont have sunscreen you need some, also apply a little to your bum cheeks.as you are laying down (naked) flat on your back, so your bum cheeks are pressed on the bed, and trust me if you dont put sunscreen on then they will go red raw. and you honestly wont be able to sit down for a week ahah. (bad experience)
it’s really cool the first time you go.
it’s like a bed, but you just pull a cover over you, and they normally dont close ALL the way.
you should do half time on your back, and half time on your stomach.
be careful because it’s really like going to the beach.
but instead it’s like your laying on the sun. (not as hot hot )
you should also get a pair of solarium goggles. you dont need these but if you want you can wear them. stpos the bright light.
just have fun. its a good experience.
just dont get hooked into it and go every single day. try every second day
have fun!
xx
